Weekly Tip – Try Raw Not Roasted Nuts

category: Week by Week Optimum Health
by Lisa Druxman,

nutsNuts are a super healthy snack so long as you watch your serving sizes. Studies have shown that people who eat nuts regularly have fewer heart attacks which is probably due to the heart healthy monounsaturated fats. The question is, does it matter if you eat your nuts raw or roasted. Some studies have shown that the high heat of roasting causes the fats to break down and free radicals to form. We know that free radicals cause damage to our cells. Another concern when roasting is acrylamide formation. Acrylamides are known to cause cancer in animals. Plus, prepackaged nuts are usually laden in salt and oil which takes away the health value. So, when possible, choose raw not roasted! If you like the flavor (and digest them better) of roasted nuts, do it yourself!
